Today is a national holiday in Italy: All Saints Day (tomorrow is the Day of the Dead), so most things were shut down. Sorella Frogley, who lives one floor directly below us, was sick, so Anziano Knies and I gave her a blessing in the morning. The sorelle are in three, which is unusual, but they had an appointment they needed to go to, so my wife went down for a couple of hours to stay with Sorella Frogley while she slept so the other two sorelle could teach their lesson. Then my wife came home and ran to Conad to do some quick shopping before they closed early for the holiday.
I went out and got the car washed at the do-it-yourself place. Not great, but good enough. I also tried to fill up our car at the same place, but they don't take any plastic except Bancomat cards, which is an Italian ATM card, and I only had big bills (running out of cash) which they wouldn't accept. Fortunately, there's an Esso station near our house which accepted my Andrews Federal chip-and-PIN card, so I was finally able to fill the car up.
This evening I went to the airport to pick up some young missionaries flying in from Sardegna. Tomorrow is a mission conference of sorts, with a new member of the Seventy coming in from Copenhagen. Everyone in Sicily met with him today, and the rest of the mission is meeting tomorrow in Rome, so missionaries are flying, driving, and taking the train in for the event, including from Malta and Sardegna. That means that missionary apartments here become swamped with out-of-town missionaries for the night. We will have two young elders from Brindisi here soon, and the sisters below us will have six (!) other sisters from around the mission jammed into their apartment, for a total of nine young sisters overnight. In the morning we head over to the Rome West stake center for a 9am-3pm meeting. We had to buy some extra bedding for our spare room, and she is cooking a tuna casserole for the Elders and Sisters when they get here, as well as cleaning our floors and bathrooms.
On the way to the airport I followed Anziano Knies in the mission van. There wasn't much traffic thanks to the holiday, so we made it there and back easily, about 40 minute each way. Something very odd happened while driving there: the Bluetooth in the car started ringing, with the screen asking me to answer the call. That was very strange because I've never paired my phone with the car! Finally I answered the call, and somebody asked for Anziano Knies. I was very confused and told him to call back in half an hour. Apparently what happened was that I was close enough to his van that his phone paired with my car! He had been a passenger in our car when the Thackers had it, and he paired it to play some music. Mystery solved!
I brought four sisters from Sardegna back here, two to stay overnight in the apartment below, and two to stay with the Spragues. Our elders just arrived and got fed. We need to hit the sack soon, as tomorrow will be a very early day.
